A record number of children were born from 1944 to 1964. Known as the "Baby Boom" generation, the large number of children reaching school age in the 1950s and early 1960s meant the building of many schools or expansion of existing school facilities across Minnesota.

This 1959 photograph shows Richfield Junior High School, located at 7461 Oliver Avenue South, under construction.
